Answering water industry Big Questions - research gathers momentum

Published On 23/08/2018

Now that the Zero Leakage Big Question (BQ) is well underway, and the Drinking Water Quality BQ initial projects have been formulated, UKWIR is setting out an overall framework for future BQ development.

A BQ governance framework has been agreed with members as reported on the front page. Within this projects are to be allocated impact scores and proposals will be shared with members for comment and agreement.

This assists the application of a democratic approval and prioritisation approach. Some of the recent key BQ developments have been:

BQ1: Halve our abstractions

A phase 1 gap analysis project has been advertised and stakeholder engagement maps produced.

A workshop is planned when phase 1 of project is complete to discuss the outcomes of the work and aid development of a BQ1 Route Map.

BQ2: Zero leakage

BQ2 is now in the phase 2 stage. Three projects are underway and will complete by Sept 2018. Fifteen projects in total have now been prioritised.

The next five project proposal documents are being finalised. These will be shared with members shortly.

BQ4: Drinking water quality

BQ4 is progressing onto phase 2. A Route Map has been finalised and can be accessed via the UKWIR website.

Stakeholder engagement maps have been produced.

Three initial projects have been formulated and are described in the section below.

BQ6: Zero uncontrolled discharges

BQ6 is also entering its phase 2 stage. The Route Map has been drafted, four projects defined and scored and further projects are now being scoped. These will be shared with members shortly.
